For the first months of the war, the First US WW2 Uniforms was very similar to that worn by the American Expeditionary Corps in the First World War.
Of course, the stand-up collar, a feature common to most uniforms of the period, was replaced by a soft open collar revealing shirt and tie, and puttes gave away to gaiters or stiff canvas leggings, but these minor changes hardly made the battledress more practical.
They still wore a British-style helmet and, for a relatively brief period, the awkward boy-scout style hat. The thin hat was soon replaced by a new and better helmet, the M1, based originally on a German design which entered mass production and became standard issue from june 9, 1941.
It was worn over a compressed fibre helmet, slightly smaller in size, which acted as a lining or could be used on its own behind the front lines.
In 1941, the only field service dress in existence was a short dark-olive waterproof jacket. Faced with a huge army which would have to gight on many fronts and in conditions that needed special clothing, the Ordnance Corps hastened to fill the gaps that appeared in the range of uniforms available.
